“Tejanos: The Border Crossed Us,” a printmaking portfolio exchange, will be on display Oct. 4-Nov. 11 at the Catapult Press in Catapult Creative House.
The exhibit, organized by J. Leigh Garcia, adjunct professor at Pensacola State College, and artist Wendi Valladares, explores the complex history between Texans and Mexicans which resulted in a melding of these two cultures into what is known today as Tejanos.
“While many Mexican-Americans identify as Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx, Tejano/Tejana/Tejanx is a term specifically for Mexican-Americans who call Texas their home,” said Valladares. “For many Tejanos, their familial lineage in present-day Texas dates back to before the Texas Revolution, hence the famous line, ‘We never crossed the border, the border crossed us.””
