“Cityscapes,” featuring ceramic works by Southeast Missouri State University student artist Bella Szabo, is the fourth Student Artist of the Month exhibition of the Fall 2020 exhibition season at Southeast’s Catapult Creative House.
The exhibition is currently on view on the second floor of Catapult Creative House, and will remain on display through Dec. 5. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. Face coverings will be required, and social distancing guidelines will be in place.
Szabo is a senior ceramics and French double major from Springfield, Illinois. She plans to graduate from Southeast in May 2021.
“Cityscapes” reminds viewers of the aesthetic novelty and necessity of architecture’s role in Art History. Combining the interest in ostensibly simple forms with inventive glazes, Szabo is able to accentuate both the shape and beauty of each piece.
Szabo’s current body of work is inspired by the architecture she encountered on her travels to France, Hungary, Italy, Scotland and England, as well as architecture from countries she plans to visit. From spires to mosques and minarets, European and Eastern architecture is abstracted and folded into ceramic forms that can fit within the palm of a hand.
As a part of a program to promote community-based and integrated art making, a student artist is chosen to exhibit his or her work at Catapult Creative House’s Student Studio Gallery each month. These exhibitions will showcase a range of work from individual artists that highlights their personal and professional artistic explorations as a part of the Southeast Missouri art community. These artists explore the physicality of the human condition, its relationship to nature, and the role of art in contemporary society. In addition to the exhibition, attendees are welcome to tour the studio spaces, view ongoing projects and engage with the artists.
